Sports Massage – How much will it Help Me?

If you participate in sport, then you need a sports massage.

Hey there sports lovers, on the couch and out on the ground. I’m here help you bend deeper, throw further, reach higher, kick longer, roll smoother, run corners and let’s not forget the 5 D’s: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge! (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Ben Stiller, 2004)

Sports Massage just might be your saviour! As a pre- game or post game treatment, I’m here to help. Sports massage has become a general term for hard and fast massage treatment. It is a well- considered treatment depending on weather you are going into a game or as a treatment after the game. Sports massage should be performed a day or two out from the event and up to 24 hours after the event.

A day or two pre event is important so as there is no soreness going into the sport event you’ve trained hard for, months, weeks and days before. Your therapist will assist you with any worries you may experience. They may be in consultation with other therapists you are or have been using to get you this far. The other therapist could be your physiotherapist, surgeon, sports psychologist, chiropractor, osteopath or anyone else in your team of therapists. If you don’t have a massage therapist or Myotherapist in your team – GET ONE! They could save you and get you over the finish line.

As with all Myotherapy treatments there will be a detailed health history and history of your sporting endeavours. This will help the therapist give you gains you may never have had before. If you’ve had previous injuries, where? How well did you heel? Was there surgery involved? Who else was involved in your recovery and what else happened at the time? All of this will help your current treatments be better for you.

Sports massage includes assessing your range of movement, stretches for pre and post event. Your Myotherapist may even strap some joints/limbs for support to help you get through the game. Ask about this. Pre-event treatment usually won’t be specific to an injury as it is to warm up, loosen up, increase blood flow to and relax the muscle ready for the big event.

You may be referred to another professional for further treatments such as ultra-sound, x-rays, sports acupuncture or anything else your Myotherapist thinks you may need to get the best out of your body for the event. Not all treatment will be pleasant as it is treatment and treating an injury may be a little painful.

All up your Myotherapist can help you with a range of injuries from tennis/golfers elbow, cyclist’s hip, runner’s knee, catcher’s wrist and anything else you’ve heard of. Don’t be afraid to make the call. The only one that will suffer if you don’t, is you. Be better at the sports and events you love to participate in. You will be glad you did, and so will your team mates and coach!
